Learn how to construct a simple block repeat pattern using your own imagery. You will be shown how to translate your design onto a screen and prints onto a length of fabric. 

As well as producing samples, participants will have the chance to turn their design into a printed lampshade to take home. 

Zara will demonstrate each stage of the process supporting you in designing and printing your own design.

Course Structure

Day 1

  • Preparing imagery, design and screen;
  • Welcome to LPW and introduction to the course
  • Tutor introduction showing examples of own work, briefing on the intended outcomes for the course.
  • Demo: How to select appropriate imagery for screen
  • Demo: How to design a block repeat
  • Translate art work into designs prepared for screens by either photocopy onto acetate or hand drawn onto drafting film
  • Individual tutorial to discuss images for exposing on to screen
  • Participants: Work on preparing design
  • Demo: How to coat a screen
  • Select an A2 size screen for printing
  • Demo: Screen coating
  • Participants: Coat 1 screen each
  • Demo: Using the exposure unit to burn the image to screen
  • Participants: Expose screens
Day 2
  • Colour mixing, screen printing small samples and final length, make a lampshade;
  • Demo: Colour mixing and how to screen print, do’s and don’ts
  • Participant: Colour mixing, Printing samples and troubleshooting
  • Demo: Creating a stencil
  • Demo: Printing a fabric length
  • Participants: Screen printing a fabric length
  • Demo: Using the heat press to fix final prints
  • Demo: Lampshade making
  • Participants: Make lampshade
  • Finish final samples

About the Tutor

Zara Shephard grew up in Weston-super-Mare, she pursued her creative talents completing a foundation diploma in art and design at Weston college. Followed by a textile design degree at Winchester School of Arts graduating in 2006.

After graduation Zara was offered a job as technical instructor in printed textiles at Loughborough University. Zara taught undergraduate students skills in colour mixing, printing and dyeing. Zara is passionate about developing and learning new skills to enhance her teaching practice, whilst working at Loughborough she achieved an associate fellowship in teaching at higher education.

After ten years in Loughborough she made the decision to relocate to her home town of Weston-super-Mare and set up a print studio producing her own work and teaching others this wonderful craft. Alongside workshops in her own studio Zara teaches at Leicester Print Workshop and The Makery in Bath.

Leicester Print Workshop 

Leicester Print Workshop is the regional development centre for printmaking. Established by artists in 1986, we are a registered charity, supported by Arts Council England. Our RIBA award-winning building is situated in Leicester City Centre's Cultural Quarter and is home to a large, well equipped open access Printmaking Studio.

We have over 30 years’ experience of teaching people printmaking. Our programme offers the largest number and broadest range of printmaking courses in the region, with courses suitable for beginners as well as experienced printmakers, delivered by practicing artists and nationally renowned tutors. Participants learn in small and friendly groups in our purpose-designed studio.
