The perfect introduction to the world of textiles screenprinting.

Zara will teach you how to translate your ideas into a design, preparing them for screen. You will learn to expose your own images onto screen, print on fabric and experiment with layers. You will learn basic colour mixing skills and prepare your own colours for printing. No previous experience necessary, Zara will demonstrate each stage of the process supporting you in designing and printing your own designs.

At the end of the workshop you’ll leave with your own printed tote bag, as well as any fabric samples that you might have produced.

Course Structure

Day 1

Preparing imagery, design, screen and colour mixing;

  • 10am – 10.15am Welcome to LPW and introduction to the course
  • 10.15am – 10.45am Zara will introduce you to the process of screenprinting showing examples of own work, and explaining the intended learning outcomes for the two days.
  • 10.45am-11.30am How to select appropriate imagery for screen participants to share the ideas, drawings, images they have bought with them
  • 11.30am – 11.45am Break
  • 11.45pm – 12.30pm Translate art work into designs prepared for screens by either photocopy onto acetate or hand drawn onto drafting film during this time Zara will give individual tutorials to discuss images for exposing on to screen
  • 12.30pm - 1.30pm Learn to coat a screen
  • 1.30pm - 2.15pm Lunch
  • 2.15pm Continue to prepare designs
  • 2.45pm – 3.00pm screen exposure demo and colour mixing
  • 3pm - 4pm Screens to be exposed as and when participants are ready
  • 3.45pm - 4.00pm clear up

Day 2

Screen printing small samples, creating paper cut stencils, experimenting with layers;

  • 10am – 10.30am Aims for the day and a demo on how to screenprint, do’s and don’ts and how to create a paper cut stencil to add a layer to the design on screen
  • 10.30am Any screens not exposed in day 1 to be finished
  • 10.30am All participants to prepare screens and fabric for printing
  • 11am – 11.30am Colour mixing, Printing samples and troubleshooting
  • 11.30am – 11.45am Break
  • 11.45am – 1.30pm Screenprinting layers
  • 1.30pm - 2.15pm Lunch
  • 2.15pm – 2.30pm Demo Using the heat press to fix final prints
  • 2.30pm – 3.30pm continue printing and complete final print for tote bag
  • 3.30pm – 4.00pm Dry and press final samples clear up

    About the Tutor

    Zara Shephard is a screen print designer and the founder of Zara Emily a screen printing business with a studio in Worle, Weston-super-Mare. She creates a hand printed gift range selling online and at markets. Zara loves to teach adults and children the traditional art of screen printing at her studio or on location.

    Leicester Print Workshop 

    Leicester Print Workshop is the regional development centre for printmaking. Established by artists in 1986, we are a registered charity, supported by Arts Council England. Our RIBA award-winning building is situated in Leicester City Centre's Cultural Quarter and is home to a large, well equipped open access Printmaking Studio.

    We have over 30 years’ experience of teaching people printmaking. Our programme offers the largest number and broadest range of printmaking courses in the region, with courses suitable for beginners as well as experienced printmakers, delivered by practicing artists and nationally renowned tutors. Participants learn in small and friendly groups in our purpose-designed studio.
