"I enjoyed this course tremendously, it was an excellent follow on to the 6 week 'Introduction to Print' course. Sumiko is an excellent teacher - clear in her communication and demonstrations and inspiring and encouraging." June 2019
This popular follow on course is perfect for those who have completed Introduction to Print or those with previous printmaking experience to develop their skills further.
Over the six weeks you will work with relief, intaglio and screenprinting; spending two weeks each on reduction linocut, hard ground and soft ground etching, and photographic screenprinting.
There will be plenty of time to grow your practice and experiment with the techniques.
Course Structure
This 6 week course will be structured as follows:
Weeks 1 + 2 / Relief Printing
You will have two weeks to explore reduction linocutting. Picasso called Reduction Linocut the 'Suicide Method'. Working from one single block, learn how to cut and add colour by printing in stages, removing more from the surface of the block as you register and print in layers. No looking back! You will also be encouraged to experiment with print registration and use chine collé to add an extra dimension to your work.
Weeks 3 + 4 / Intaglio Printing
You will have two weeks to explore etching in more detail, working on a zinc plate and using soft and hard ground. Week 3 will be a good refresher for those with experience of hard ground etching. Aquatint is used to create tonal effects, rather than lines, you will be shown the application of aquatint in week 4 onto the plate you create in week 3. Great examples of this technique can be found in the work of Paula Rego, Goya and LPW Artist Sue Baker Kenton.
Weeks 5 + 6 / Screenprinting
You will have two weeks to explore screenprinting. You will get an understanding of how to get the most from your image using screenprinting to get best results. You will expose your image and print onto paper. You will learn best practice and troubleshooting. You will combine your original images with a monoprinted stencil to make a layered screenprint.
