Leicester Print Workshop is delighted to present our first three day Winter Printmaking Retreats in early 2022.

Taking place over the last weekend in January, these three day immersions will give participants a chance to dedicate time to their printmaking practice. With a choice of Drypoint, (with Senior Lecturer in Printmaking at the University of Northampton and tutor for Printmaking at Open College of Arts, artist Michelle Keegan) Linocut (with renown Leicester artist and printmaker Sarah Kirby) and Mokuhanga (with Northumbria based printmaker and artist book maker Lucy May Schofield), participants will enjoy the opportunity to experiment, play, explore and focus on their chosen technique.

These courses build on the successes of our popular weeklong Summer Schools, and present a new opportunity for artistic development, inspiration and growth over Winter.

During this immersive three-day workshop you will be introduced to the traditional Japanese art of woodblock printing. Mokuhanga is perfect for anyone interested in a non-toxic, water-based, table-top printmaking technique.

Course Structure

On day one of the course you will be introduced to the tools and process of mokuhanga through demonstrations and examples, followed by the opportunity to practice using the specialist carving tools on Japanese 'shina' ply wood. You will see a short printing demonstration to see the potential of the medium. You will then plan a simple 3 or 4 colour separation print and transfer your drawing to separate woodblocks ready to begin carving the printed areas using the 'kento' registration system.

On day two you will spend your time carefully carving and clearing your woodblocks in preparation for printing the following day. You will see a paper dampening demonstration and be expected to make your own damp pack in the afternoon and have your 'washi' paper cut and prepared in readiness for printing on Monday.

On the final day of the course, you will be shown a more in-depth printing demonstration using watercolour and 'nori' rice glue and spend your time experimenting with producing various print effects on your woodblocks, from flat colour, to sesame printing and colour gradations. You can expect to leave the course with a variety of samples of printing techniques and a small edition of A5 multi-block prints on Japanese paper, with the skills and confidence to continue carving and printing at home.

About the Tutor

Lucy May Schofield studied BA Print Media at London College of Printing before being awarded a two year Arts Council funded residency at Manchester School of Art. In 2015 Schofield was joint recipient of a grant from the British Council to exhibit a collaborative work at the IMPACT 9 Printmaking Conference. She has undertaken artist residencies in Japan, Iceland, California, Scotland and is currently based in rural Northumbria as part of a year long artist residency programme with VARC (Visual Arts in Rural Communities). Schofield’s work has been recently exhibited at The Manchester Contemporary, Art Toronto and The London Art Fair.

Drawn to isolated places and spaces that are at once remote or time extending, Schofield is interested in exploring how spaces impact on our sense of dislocation or belonging. Her practice explores language, impermanence, vulnerability and belonging in terms of the cultural narratives we inhabit.
