The Art of Traditional Dye Making and Paper Marbling

This weekend course is an amazing opportunity to learn traditional dye making techniques and the secrets of preparing pigments from their raw state into beautiful marbling inks. The first day will be spent preparing the materials and learning about the history of traditional marbling. You will discuss how to make authentic horse hair brushes and prepare your marbling water with traditional materials. You will then learn the ‘splashing’ technique that is so vital to the following days work. Day two will be spent producing Battal (big size), Tarakli (comb), Sal (shawl) and Hatip (flower) designs using the freshly made inks onto A3 paper and learning about repeat pattern and abstract images. A wonderful chance to really understand the whole process of marbling from a very experienced practitioner. Please note this course uses traditional natural ingredients that may not be suitable for vegans.

About the Tutor
Gulizar Subay graduated from Mimar Sinan University in 2010 as a History Teacher. She was trained by one of the most important Ebru Master in the world, Mr.Alparslan Babaoglu, and his student Mr.Ugur Tasatan during her 3-year course at Fatih Sultan Mehmet University.
She organises workshops and works with universities, art galleries, schools and festivals demonstrating Marbling Art in the UK.
