Tutor Sumiko Eadon & Emma Gardner

This NEW follow on course is perfect for those who have completed Intro to Print and for those with previous printmaking experience to develop their skills further.

Over the six weeks you will explore and focus on relief, intaglio and screenprinting in more detail; learning reduction linocut, aquatint etching, photographic and experimental screenprinting.

Course Structure

This 6 week course will be structured as follows:

Weeks 1 + 2 / Relief Printing

You will have two weeks to explore reduction linocutting. Picasso called Reduction Linocut the 'Suicide Method'. Working from one single block, learn how to cut and add colour by printing in stages, removing more from the surface of the block as you register and print in layers. No looking back! You will also be encouraged to experiment with print registration and use chine collé to add an extra dimension to your work.

Weeks 3 + 4 / Intaglio Printing

You will have two weeks to explore etching in more detail, working on a zinc plate and using aquatint. Aquatint is used to create tonal effects, rather than lines. Great examples of this technique can be found in the work of Paula Rego, Goya and LPW Artist Sue Baker Kenton.

Weeks 5 + 6 / Screenprinting

You will have two weeks to explore screenprinting. You will learn how to use this technique to produce photographic images using the exposure unit and to create one off monoprints using stencils.

About the Tutors

Emma Gardner joined LPW as a member and volunteer after graduating in 2012 with a degree in Fine Art from De Montfort University. In 2015 she was awarded Artist in Residence as part of the LPW Big Move project. Emma is currently a tutor at LPW and teaches a diverse range of printmaking techniques, which is reflected in her practice.

Ambiguous places, suggestive forms and isolation are all themes of exploration in her practice. Alongside her practice Emma works as a Learning Deliverer and Gallery Assistant at Compton Verney Art gallery and Park in Warwickshire, where she has an opportunity to pursue her passion for education outside the classroom.

Sumiko Eadon is a Japanese artist based in the East Midlands. She started printmaking in the early 2000s with Japanese woodcut printing and wood engraving, and then continued printmaking in the UK, joining LPW in 2013 after completing a degree in Fine Art at Loughborough University. She is an LPW studio volunteer and was one of the LPW Our Big Move artists in residence during 2015-2017.

She is also a freelance printmaking tutor and teaches printmaking regularly. Her work has been exhibited in the East Midlands and beyond.
