Lithography Two Day Course

Leicester Print Workshop is proud to be one of only a handful of studios in the UK and worldwide that offer facilities for artists to practice stone lithography, a technique used and loved by artists as varied as Henry Moore, Frank Stella, David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Emil Nolde and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. This is a rare opportunity to learn this technique in our purpose built studio with Tamarind trained lithographer Nora Hammenberg.

This course is a taster introduction to the basics of stone lithography. It is also a good starting point for those who have experience of drawing and printing their own lithographs, and want to refresh their knowledge.

Working over the two consecutive Saturdays, participants will prepare, draw and print lithographs from stone.

Following on from the course, participants can join LPW as a member and continue to develop their work, with support from the LPW Studio team.

Course Structure

First Saturday:

On the first Saturday we will learn how to prepare a lithography stone for drawing by graining it. We will draw our images on two stones shared by the group.

In the afternoon there will be a demo of how to process the stones through the first etch.

We will look at lithography prints to get an idea on how lithography can be used in many different ways.

Second Saturday:

In the morning we will have a demo on how to wash out and roll up a lithography stone and how to etch the stone a second time.

Working as a group we will then wash out, roll up and etch the two stones.

In the afternoon we will print both stones.

About the Tutor

Nora Hammenberg is a printer and artist from Sweden, who is based in Leeds. Nora is a certificated collaborative lithography printer by the prestigious Tamarind Institute of Lithography in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. She also studied printmaking at Gotheburg's School of Art in Gothenburg, Sweden, and at Ålgårdens Print Workshop and Galleries in Borås, Sweden.

Nora runs a small lithography workshop in Leeds called Stone Tree Press where she collaborates with artists and teaches courses alongside her own art practice.

Nora is dedicated to sharing her knowledge of lithography to keep these traditional skills and techniques alive.
