Boxes and Portfolios Weekend

This two day workshop provides artists with the skills and techniques to create beautiful bespoke portfolio boxes in which to store and present your work.

Learning the process of measuring, cutting, gluing and lining the boxes, you will also master the inlaying of magnets into the structure to create an invisible clasp.

This technically focused course will provide artists with the confidence and ability to construct exquisite boxes by hand.

About the Tutor

Based in rural Northumberland, after spending a year as artist-in-residence with Visual Arts in Rural Communities (VARC), Lucy May Schofield's practice is predominantly residency-based. Since graduating from London College of Printing in 2002, she was awarded a 2 year residency at Manchester School of Art, where she also worked as an Associate Lecturer until 2010.

In 2011 she relocated to Japan, where her interest in printmaking developed through the MI-LAB residency program. Works are held in public and private collections including Tate Britain, Yale Center for British Art, Stanford University, Chelsea College of Art, Manchester Metropolitan University, State Library of Queensland and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Recent work has been presented at Art Toronto, The London Art Fair and The University of Hawaii, where she received the Awagami Paper Prize.

Course Structure

On day one of the course you will be guided through the techniques to make a small portfolio box in preparation to go on to make a portfolio box to house either A4 or A3 prints on day two.

You will learn how to measure up artwork, cut and sand grey boards, glue down and turn in book cloth, insert magnet clasps and line the interior of the boxes over the two day workshop.
